: Of the many makers that create Laguiole-style knives, Fontenille Pataud is generally regarded as the best. Each knife is handmade to precision specs and is a work of visual and textural art. All of their knives are made in their workshop in Thiers, France. Their team is comprised of eight skilled craftsmen and apprentices. Gilles Steinberg, owner and master craftsman, manages the group. Basque Country is a region on the border between France and Spain, the majority of which is located in northern Spain. Referred to as the Yatagan or simply the Basque knife, this folder is the traditional daily carry knife of the region. The Basque Yatagan is a traditional knife pattern that traces its roots back to the sword with the same name.
The blade is crafted from satin finished premium 12C27 Swedish stainless steel, hardened to 56Hrc. The spring has a blade stop mechanism that keeps the edge from contacting the spring – this helps keep the edge sharp longer. Each knife features a hand fileworked back spacer — unique to the knife.
Elegant amourette wood (Brosimum guianense) scales feature the traditional shepherd’s cross inlayed with ten hand domed nickel silver pins. Snakewood is so called for its characteristic snakeskin patterns. The scales are a reddish brown with contrasting darker brown and black rings. Snakewood scales are accented with brushed stainless steel bolsters.
