: Mastersmith Jay Hendrickson’s knives have always inspired me. There is a gentlemanly elegance to his work that matches his personality. Regrettably, we see less of his knives these days, but I was very pleased that he sent us this one.
Silver vines and textured leaves are inlaid into the presentation grade curly maple handle. The antiqued wood gives an heirloom quality to this exceptional Jay Hendrickson High Clip Point Hunter. It is an incredible knife to use out in the field, though this knife will also feel at home in any collection.
Jay began by forging the 80CrV2 carbon steel blade to shape. The appleseed grind is a hallmark of Jay’s hand forged knives. A clear differential heat treatment line travels along the blade, showing the transition between soft, supportive spine and the keen, hard edge steel. Jay believes strongly in the hand forging process and it clearly shows in his work. By forging the blade to shape, Jay ensures optimal edge retention.
The handle is formed from presentation grade curly maple combined with India stag. Scrolls of fine silver are meticulously inlaid into each side of the maple handle. The scales are set on a full tang for strength and durability. The shaping of the maple feels great in hand. All finishing and embellishments — of both the knife and sheath — is completed by Jay in his shop.
This knife is accompanied by a custom hand tooled leather sheath. Excellent work throughout!
