: I was very excited when I first got a look at Jean Wilke’s knives. Jean is a young custom knifemaker from Pretoria, South Africa. His knives are exceptionally well designed and tested. His attention to detail is clearly evident in each of his creations. He is currently working with Mastersmiths Kevin and Heather Harvey, travelling back and forth every two weeks, alternating between working at Heavin Forge and home forge, Fire Goby Forge. It is very exciting to see such a young maker with such tremendous talent.
This matching Piggyback Set shows Jean’s incredible skills at work. The matching blades are hand forged 1095 carbon steel featuring a hand rubbed satin finish. 1095 provides a nice balance of high edge holding and chip resistance. Borrowing from the world of Japanese swords, Jean coated the spine with clay prior to heat treatment. The clay acts as a heat sink, keeping the spine softer and supportive, while allowing the edge to be exceptionally hard. The undulating heat treatment line seen in the blade is called a hamon. The blade is distal tapered and feels exceptional in the hand. The spine is nicely rounded for comfort. The Large camp knife has a blade length of 9-1/2 inches with an overall length of 14.7 inches. The smaller hunter has a blade length of 3.9 inches with an overall length of 8.1 inches.
The matching handles are wenge wood, secured to the tang using hand domed pins. Antique wrought iron guards separate the blades from the handles. The distressed wrought iron has a nearly damascene pattern. Fileworked spacers add a touch of contrast to the dark toned handles.
To keep the knives close at hand, a tooled black leather piggyback sheath is included. The sheath holds both knives and can be worn easily on the belt.
