: Ryan Breuer is a bladesmith from Worcester, Massachusetts currently specializing in making hunting knives, bowie knives, and swords. He learned to make swords under renowned sword maker Peter Johnsson. He received his Journeyman Smith award at the 2022 Blade Show in Atlanta, GA. Meeting Ryan was a pleasure and his knowledge and passion for his craft was very refreshing.
This Integral Hunting Knife was part of Ryan’s JS test set. When a maker tests to become a journeyman, they create five knives that are the height of their skill. These five knives are then judged by established masters to determine if the maker’s work is up to snuff. Often, prospective journeymen spend 2-3 times longer creating these five knives as they would generally do, as they know that their work will be poured over by the masters. These five knives are generally considered to be among the most collectable knives of a maker’s career.
The drop point blade was forged from 1080 carbon steel. A meticulous hand rubbed satin finish provides an heirloom quality to the blade. Ryan’s mark is on the left side of the blade.
The bolster is integral to the blade. This technique has superior structural integrity and requires a particularly talented smith. The integral bolster is heirloom fit to the stabilized buckeye burl handle which will allow the handle adjust to humidity and temperature changes. The contoured handle provides a comfortable grip and fills your hand nicely.
