: We were pleased to meet Johan van der Walt at the Knifemakers’ Guild of Southern Africa Knife Show. Johan is from Johannesburg, South Africa and is creating some exceptional handmade folding knives. He builds working folders inteded for use, though they would feel right at home in any knife collection.
The blade on this JB1 Linerlock Flipper is hand ground M390 stainless steel. M390 is a super-steel created by Bohler in Austria. It takes an incredibly sharp edge and holds onto it due to a high concentration of vanadium and chromium carbides. Its unique powder metallurgical process also promotes a uniform carbide distribution and clean steel properties, making M390 a popular steel used in surgical cutting instruments and in applications requiring a high finish. It offers excellent corrosion resistance due to its high concentration of chromium. The blade is hollow ground for an easy to maintain edge. The grinds of the blade feature a hand rubbed satin finish while the flats of the blade are brought to a polish.
Ceramic bearings ensure the blade has silky-smooth, drop-shut action and is perfectly centered.
Handle scales are copper marble carbon fiber. The scales are set on anodized titanium liners. A copper pivot collar surrounds the pivot. The 3D machined titanium pocket clip is anodized and mounted for right-side, tip-up carry.
